Q: How long have you been a professional DJ in the wedding industry and how did you get your start?
A: I've been a DJ for 23 years. Prior to that, I was a professional musician playing at events and venues coast to coast. I had always been friendly with DJ's at these venues. They told me repeatedly that I would be a natural as an MC/DJ. After moving to Arizona in the early 90's, I started working for a well know DJ company. 3 1/2 years ago I purchased Starz Entertainment. Now we have 9 talented DJ's on staff.
Q: Do you offer services for the ceremony as well, such as wireless mics for the vows and music? What about up lighting and monograms for the reception?
A: Yes, we offer all of the services above. Wireless lapel mics are almost always included in our ceremony packages. Dance floor lighting is included in most packages. Uplights, monogram lights and a projector/screen are available options as well.
Q: Are couples able to customize their program to fit their unique personalities? What are a few examples of ways to stand out from other weddings, so the guests are entertained?
A: We encourage our wedding couples to be different and will help them create a truly unique experience for their family and guests. We believe that the best way to keep guests entertained is with fun introductions and clever ways to release tables for the buffet. The Newlywed game is still a big hit with our couples and we have just introduced something called "The Selfie Sprint" which has been a huge success for us. Some of our DJ's are also excellent dancers and will jump out on the dance floor with the guests. We do far more than just stand behind the table and press play.
Q: Where do couples start when compiling their song list? Can they also request certain songs they do not want to include?
A: Couples can begin work on the soundtrack as soon as they inquire about ourservices. As a thank you for contacting Starz, we provide immediate access to their very own "Event Planner" where then can complete planning forms and select music. This is a great resource to help organize details and songs. In the song section of theplanner there is a "Do Not Play" option.
Q: Do you recommend taking song requests from guests during the party portion?
A: Absolutely! In fact we prefer it to having ONLY a specific list of songs. Any reputable DJ will tell you that there is no way to predict how a crowd will respond on any given day. That is where the expertise of the DJ is critical to the success of the event.
Q: Is there a guide for preparing for the toasts? What if the wedding party or parents are nervous speaking in front of a group?
A: We actually do provide a "Guide to Making a Wedding Toast." This is a great help for folks who are a little nervous on the mic. We also encourage our DJ's to do a mic check (either before the ceremony or during the cocktail reception) with anyone doing a toast.
Q: Are there creative ways to highlight the personalities of the wedding party during the grand entrance that tie into the overall style of the wedding?
A: We provide "Examples of Fun Wedding Party Introductions." Our clients are encouraged to provide some fun facts for each wedding party member or perhaps give each couple or individual their own song for their entrance. Our DJ's are responsible for lining everyone up, double checking name pronunciation and instructing everyone where to go when they are introduced. In this case we very much become the "Director" of the event.
Q: Do you have any suggestions for incorporating a tribute or remembrance of a loved one?
A: "Celebrating in Spirit" moments (that usually includes a special song) during the reception can be fun and uplifting if handled right. Our DJ's are very careful to set these moments up properly and do them at an appropriate time. If the remembrance is more solemn, then it should be done during the ceremony.
Q: Is it important to know details about the couple such as how they met and the proposal?
A: We always ask "How did you meet?" "Where are you from?" "Where was the proposal?" "What business are you in?". Questions like these serve multiple purposes. Not only does the info help us to get to know the client, but some of the info they share helps create common ground and build a rapport.
Q: Do you coordinate with the other vendors prior to the big day, such as the planner, photographer & videographer? Are you attentive during the event to be sure they are in place to capture each key moment like the bouquet toss?
A: Our online Planner automatically sends a copy of the timeline to all vendors 10 days prior to wedding day. Our DJ's typically will call the venue, catering and sometimes thephotographer for a quick check in. Unless the client has hired a Wedding Planner (recommended), in many ways it becomes the responsibility of the MC/DJ to oversee the flow of the wedding.
